  • PCD Drills — Holes That Stay on Target

    Take a standard carbide drill. Put it in aluminum plate. Run it at production speed. Now watch the exit burr form on hole fifty that wasn't there on hole five. By hole five hundred, the burr has grown into a visible crown and the operator is reaching for the offset adjustment — or the scrap bin.

    Now swap to PCD. Run the same program. Hole five hundred looks like hole five. No growing burr. No drifting position. No compensation. The tool hasn't changed because the edge hasn't changed.

    Diamond at the Drill Point

    A PCD drill doesn't have a coating that wears through. The polycrystalline diamond layer at the cutting edge is the tool surface itself — sintered, not deposited. When the drill tip engages aluminum, the diamond shears through

    the material without aluminum's universal trick: sticking to the cutting edge and forming a built-up deposit that alters hole diameter and exit quality.

    When the same tip hits a carbon fiber panel, fibers are severed rather than displaced. The exit ply remains intact. The hole is a hole, not a crater surrounded by delaminated laminate.

    Heat: The Silent Saboteur

    Drilling is a confined operation. The tool is surrounded by workpiece material. Heat has nowhere to go — except into the tool, unless the tool material conducts it away faster than it accumulates.

    Diamond's thermal conductivity outperforms carbide by roughly five times. At the bottom of a deep hole in continuous production, that differential translates into a cooler cutting edge, stable dimensions, and no thermal expansion

    eating into tight tolerances.
